Attendance
Attendance Line (505) 843-8283 ext. 0
A key component for ensuring that students meet high academic standards is daily punctual attendance. Compelling research exists between the success of students and their consistent attendance. APS students are allowed no more than 10 unexcused absences per school year. The parent/guardian must notify the School Office each day that the student will be absent. Absences may be excused for the following reasons with appropriate documentation:
- Doctor’s appointment
- Death in the family
- Religious commitment
- Illness
- Family emergency
- Diagnostic testing
- School visit
Review the school handbook or APS Attendance policy for more information.
Cell Phone Policy
APS has a Cell Phone Policy that was approved in May, 2010. The policy states that students are permitted to use personal electronic devices while on campus and at school activities provided they do not disrupt the school day and are not used in an unauthorized fashion. If you send your child to school with a cell phone please be mindful that we do ask that all students silence or turn off their cell phones during school hours from 8:30 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.
Dress Code
Our dress code follows APS policy and is intended to help maintain a safe and productive learning environment for all students. We ask that parents/guardians assist their children in dressing appropriately for school. Hats and sun glasses are not worn inside buildings or classrooms, but are encouraged for wear outside to protect from sun damage. Spaghetti straps, halter-tops and shirts that expose the abdomen are not allowed. Tank tops are accepted if worn appropriately. If a sports jersey with large armholes is worn, please make sure that a t-shirt is worn under it. Clothing should fit comfortably and be appropriately sized. Excessively baggy pants and clothing which promotes drug or alcohol products are not allowed at school. Shorts and skirts should be no shorter than “fingertip length”. The same fingertip measure will be used to measure the appropriate length of t-shirts. School is at all times a place of learning. It is important to keep distractions to a minimum. Makeup is not to be worn by students. Tattoos are not allowed. When in doubt; use common sense. What can be seen as appropriate for home will not always be appropriate at school. Students will be asked to call home if a change of clothing is required. It is also important that students wear appropriate footwear and clothing for physical education classes. Wearing flip-flops or sandals will make it difficult to fully participate.
Pick-up And Drop-off Procedures
In our continuing effort to provide a safe environment for students, families and staff alike, we ask that you consider the following when using our parking lot: If you want to walk into our playground area to either drop off or pick up your children, please park along Stover, Iron or 5th Streets. Our drop off/pick-up area is designed for parents to drive up only. If you intend to stay longer, we welcome you, but when you park in this area, you block off the area for other parents. While parking in the green zone may be convenient for you, it creates a huge inconvenience and even a danger for others. Thank you for your commitment to keep all Coronado students, families and staff members safe.
